How to Merge Videos for YouTube

The simplest way to merge videos for YouTube is not to merge them at all. Record them as consecutive clips inside one Short. YouTube's creation tools let you record one or more clips that add up to three minutes, and they arrive already joined.

Tap Create, then Short. Hold Capture to record and release to stop; repeat for each piece. Undo and Redo let you drop a bad take without starting over. When the sequence is right, tap Done, then Next to add details, then Upload Short, or Save draft to come back to it.

One practical limitation: the Shorts camera isn't available on tablets. On a tablet, the clips have to be joined in an editor and uploaded as a single file.

The ceiling that isn't three minutes

Three minutes is the headline number, but it isn't always the operative one. Shorts over one minute that carry a Content ID claim are blocked on YouTube. If any clip in your sequence contains commercial music , playing in the background of a coffee shop, on a car radio, in a shop , the real ceiling for that Short is sixty seconds.

Worth checking before you record four minutes of material and trim down to two and a half.

What happens where two clips meet

Recording clips back to back gives you hard cuts and nothing else. Sometimes that's exactly right. Sometimes the join is the thing you want to design.
