Cropping isn't only a visual decision on YouTube, it's a classification decision. Videos uploaded on or after 15 October 2024 with a square or vertical aspect ratio, up to three minutes in length, are categorized as Shorts. A wider ratio keeps the upload in long-form territory.
That means a crop can quietly move your video into a different feed with different rules. Worth choosing deliberately rather than discovering afterwards.
Blur: the framing edit you can still make after publishing
